What began as a disagreement over loud music at an Albuquerque apartment complex ended with a 16-year-old girl dead, a 10-year-old accused of pulling the trigger, and his mother facing murder charges.
A noise complaint is supposed to end with someone turning down the volume. This one ended with homicide detectives.
According to Albuquerque police, 40-year-old Elaina Gomez-Villeda confronted her neighbors on October 31 after complaining that their music was too loud.
The neighbors, Susana Rangel and her 16-year-old daughter, Keinerlein Rangel, were reportedly unpacking belongings inside their apartment when Gomez-Villeda initially approached them.
Minutes later, while the mother and daughter were outside installing a security camera, another confrontation erupted.
Investigators say Gomez-Villeda began physically fighting with Susana Rangel. Keinerlein attempted to intervene, and police allege Gomez-Villeda struck the teenager as well.
Her own 10-year-old son also reportedly tried to intervene.
But according to the criminal complaint, rather than removing her child from the confrontation, Gomez-Villeda allegedly instructed him to return to their apartment and retrieve her handgun.
The boy reportedly complied.
He returned outside carrying the firearm and fired a single shot, fatally striking Keinerlein.
A disagreement over music had now cost a teenage girl her life.
Investigators say Gomez-Villeda took her son back inside the apartment following the shooting.
According to police, she then sent her husband a text message stating, “I’m probably going to jail right now.”
She subsequently called 911, claiming she had been attacked by her neighbors.
Authorities say the situation escalated further when the victim’s father attempted to enter Gomez-Villeda’s apartment after learning his daughter had been shot.
Gomez-Villeda told investigators she fired another gunshot in an effort to frighten him away.
When officers arrived, they encountered Gomez-Villeda armed with a handgun. An officer fired toward her but missed. She ultimately surrendered.
Investigators later reported discovering additional unsecured firearms inside her apartment. A revolver recovered outside was also identified as stolen.
Gomez-Villeda faces multiple criminal charges, including murder, child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, negligent firearm access, battery, and receiving stolen property.
Prosecutors have sought to keep her detained pending trial.
Meanwhile, authorities are working with prosecutors and state officials to determine whether the 10-year-old can face criminal charges given his age. As of the latest confirmed reporting, the child had not been charged.
Gomez-Villeda has disputed aspects of the confrontation, alleging that her neighbors attacked her. The criminal allegations against her have not been proven in court.
What remains undisputed is the outcome: a 16-year-old girl is dead following a confrontation that began over loud music.
A dispute that could have ended with a closed door instead ended with a fatal gunshot, an arrest, and two families facing life-altering consequences.
The investigation remains ongoing.
